Lavishly illustrated book showing work done by Bawden for Fortnum and Mason between 1932 and 1939 and also 1955 and 1959

Fortnum & Mason and Edward Bawden were an unlikely double act: one a firm devoted to luxury provisions and lavish entertaining, the other a shy, retiring artist, who once proposed to offer charcoal biscuits and water to guests at a gloom party. Yet the relationship inspired Bawden to produce some of his finest work, and today his vivid, fanciful illustrations are widely appreciated. This book presents the advertising material illustrated by the artist for Fortnum & Mason on either side of World War II. Showcasing Christmas catalogues, menu cards, promotional brochures and other ephemera, this luxurious volume is the ideal souvenir of Fortnums recent 300th anniversary and a memento of Edward Bawdens work.

If the worlds favourite English emporium is famous for promoting a love of good things, Edward Bawden is the one artist who best captured that spirit. The introductory essay is by Peyton Skipwith, Edward Bawdens literary executor and a former director of the Fine Art Society.
